Khum Phean was born in 1958 in Tak Province and spent much of her early adult life working in logging until the practice was banned in 1989. She was then put to work at a trekking camp, taking people on rides day after day for decades until her rescue in 2018 when she came to live at our sanctuary.

Since arriving, Khum Phean has formed a close friendship with Kaw Ta. She loves to play in the mud and is no doubt happy to be living a chain-free life without the need to work. Khum Phean loves to eat and can often be seen munching on the leaves of the trees growing at the sanctuary. Her teeth have worn down over the years, so she is provided with a lot of soft foods to make eating easier.
