Lam Yai was born in 1966 and spent much of her early adult life working in logging until the practice was banned in 1989. She was then put to work at various trekking camps, taking people on rides day after day for decades.
Lam Yai was rescued in 2019, leaving behind a life of abuse that has left her scarred—both physically and mentally. Since her rescue Lam Yai’s life has been transformed and she enjoys swimming in the dam, wandering around the sanctuary, and foraging on natural vegetation. She is especially fond of bananas. She formed a strong bond with Kham Sing, who was also blind in her left eye. Sadly, Kham Sing passed away in June 2024, which was a tragic loss for Lam Yai. For now, she prefers spending time on her own, but it is hoped that in time she will form bonds with other elephants.
