Ma Mai is a female elephant born around 1975, making her about 50 years old. For over two decades, she worked on the island of Koh Chang, giving rides to tourists. Aftering learning that she was at risk of being sold to yet another trekking camp, we stepped in to offer her a brighter future.

On August 8, 2025, Ma Mai began her journey to freedom. After a long 20-hour trip—including two ferry crossings—she arrived safely at Samui Elephant Sanctuary Chaweng Noi.

Now settling into her new home, Ma Mai spends her days wandering the forest, foraging, and enjoying the peace of her natural surroundings. She’s a spirited and sociable elephant, friendly with both people and other elephants. She has a big appetite, and her favourite foods include bananas, watermelons, and the bark and leaves of certain trees. Ma Mai especially loves playing in the water, dusting herself with sand, and taking long mud baths.

Now free from a life of hardship, Ma Mai begins a new chapter—one filled with peace, freedom, and kindness. In time, we hope she will form friendships with the other rescued elephants. From now on, she will live safely at our sanctuary, surrounded by nature and cared for with love and respect.
