Mae Kham Kaew was born in 1973 in Mae Hong Son Province and spent much of her early adult life working in logging until the practice was banned in 1989. She was then put to work at various trekking camps throughout the country, taking people on rides day after day for decades.

Mae Kham Kaew was rescued in 2018 and is now rehabilitating at our sanctuary where, for the first time in her life, her well-being takes the highest priority. She is blind in her right eye, so it’s best to stand on her left side so that she can see you. Mae Kham Kaew has formed a strong friendship with Cartoon and they spend a lot of time together. Mae Kham Kaew is a very friendly elephant who seems to enjoy seeing visitors, especially if they have food to offer her – watermelon being a favorite.
